The Hardworkers designs and builds pools, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, water features and paver hardscape across The Valley, Arizona. We are licensed and insured under ROC #332299, based in Mesa, and most of our work sits in the East Valley and North Valley — Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Gilbert, Chandler, Peoria, Surprise and Queen Creek. The guide below covers the three requests we get most often, and the details that decide whether the finished yard feels intentional or pieced together.

Cantilever pergolas
A cantilever pergola carries its roof from one anchored side, so the shade reaches out over the patio, outdoor kitchen or pool edge without a post landing in the walkway. In the Valley that matters twice: it keeps the deck clear for foot traffic and it keeps the sightline to the water unbroken, which is why we build them over kitchens, lounge areas and sun shelves where a post would sit exactly where you want to look.
Structurally the work is all in the footing and the frame. We engineer the span for the depth of cover the yard needs, then finish the underside with a wood-panel ceiling, recessed lighting and string lights. The open slat or solid roof choice changes how much heat the structure holds in July and how much of the evening sky you still see.

Pool water features
Water features do two jobs in an Arizona pool: they add sound that masks the street and the neighbors, and they give the eye somewhere to rest after dark. Sheer descents release a thin, glass-like sheet of water from a raised wall, quiet and architectural, and they take LED lighting beautifully. Stacked-stone waterfalls and grottos move more water over natural stone for a louder, more organic effect.
The strongest builds combine both — a stacked-stone wall with twin sheer descents and a linear fire trough along the cap, or a raised spa with quiet scuppers at one end and a louder waterfall at the far end. Placement is decided early, because the coping, tile and plaster on that wall are all chosen together so the feature reads as part of the pool rather than an addition to it.
Paver driveways & motor courts
A paver driveway or motor court is the first thing anyone sees, so we treat the pattern as part of the architecture: herringbone for movement, running bond for a calm modern face, and banded or turf-strip layouts on wide frontages. Travertine, the Phoenix Paver series and Belgrad pavers all hold their color through the summer sun, and each one sets a different tone next to stucco and desert planting.
Pavers also fail better than concrete. If a section settles or a utility trench has to open, individual units lift and reset instead of a slab being cut and patched. A penetrating sealer on travertine keeps stains from soaking in and slows the sun's fade, and we quote sealing as its own line so you know what you are paying for.
What to decide before we break ground
- 01
Stand in the yard at 3pm and again at sunset — mark where you actually want shade and where you want the water feature visible from.
- 02
Set the kitchen and pergola footprint first; pools and paver fields are laid out around the way you will use the covered space.
- 03
Choose the finish and waterline tile with the hardscape in view, since the deck color changes how the water reads.
- 04
Price the whole scope with our estimator, then talk through phasing — shade this year, water feature next.
- 05
Check HOA and setback rules for structures and driveways before the design is final.
Answers before you call
Do cantilever pergolas need posts in the pool deck?
No. A cantilever pergola is anchored and engineered on one side, so the roof reaches out over the pool, kitchen or lounge area without posts landing in the deck. That keeps walkways clear and the view across the water open. We size the footings and steel for the span and for Valley wind, then finish the underside with wood panels, lighting and string lights.
What is the difference between a sheer descent and a waterfall?
A sheer descent releases a thin, glass-like sheet of water from a raised wall, so it is quiet and reads as a clean architectural line — often lit with LEDs at night. A waterfall or grotto moves more water over stacked stone or boulders and adds sound and a natural texture. Many of our builds pair one sheer descent wall with a fire trough, or a quiet scupper spa with a louder feature at the far end of the pool.
How long does a paver driveway last in Arizona?
A properly based paver driveway holds up for decades in the Valley. Pavers are set on compacted base with edge restraint, and individual units can be lifted and reset if a utility trench or a settled corner needs attention. Travertine, Phoenix Paver series and Belgrad pavers all handle intense summer sun without the surface cracking you see on poured concrete slabs.
Can you add a pergola or water feature to an existing pool and patio?
Yes. Retrofits are a large part of what we build — a cantilever shade structure over an existing deck, a raised stacked-stone wall with sheer descents, or a paver motor court in place of an old slab. We inspect the existing deck, plumbing and grade first, then design the addition so it looks original to the yard.
